Academic libraries struggle with a preponderance of content in many different forms, from print books to ebooks, databases, journals and periodicals, streaming video and other media. A library’s collection is the aggregate of all these things. The primary challenge libraries face is determining what materials to acquire and in what format.

In addition to providing a snapshot of current trends in library collections at two- and four-year colleges and universities, the goal of Library Journal’s 2018 Academic Library Collection Development Survey was to learn and share how academic librarians approach collection development. The data in this report is based on responses from 282 academic librarians, all of whom are involved in the recommendation or purchasing process of materials for their library.
